Swimming Pool for Dogs
There is nothing more enjoyable than swimming during hot summer days. Whose family does not enjoy looking at their kids’ faces as they are playing happily in a pool? If you are raising a dog, you know that lots of dogs love water too. Summer can be harsh on your lovely dog. He may suffer heatstroke, and it can even be fatal to your pet.
One great way to help your dog avoid getting hyperthermia or heat stroke this summer is to have your dog go for a refreshing swim.
Unfortunately, taking your dog to private dog swimming pools can cost a lot. To save money and let your dog get that water experience ANY TIME! You can build your own dog pool and customize it for your furry pet.
In our article, we will learn how to build a swimming pool for dogs that best fits your garden without sacrificing your dog’s aquatic enjoyment.
Materials and Tools:
- Scrap plywood
- A drill
- Screws
- A tarp (You can use an old one)
- A saw
- A meter
Step 1: Building the box
In this step, you will create a wooden box. You will need five pieces of wood screwing together, set the dimensions as follows:
- (1) 45 x 25 – the bottom
- (2) 44 x 9 1/2 – long sides
- (2) 26 1/2 x 9 1/2 – short sides
Of course, you can change the size depending on your materials and the size of your dog. You should make sure the swimming pool is shallow enough so your dog can easily walk in and out of it.
Step 2: Lining the box with a tarp
Once you had made the box, you need a tarp that is folded a couple of times, line it over the box, screw it down on the sides using a drill. If you use an old tarp, you may need to fix any holes by using a couple of pieces of duct tape.
Step 3: Fill up the swimming pool
Make sure that you pushed the tarp down properly, so nothing would tear once the swimming pool gets filled with water. Start to fill the pool with a hose and invite your dog into the pool.
Step 4: Further Improvements
So this is not a super permanent swimming pool for dogs, you just make a simple one using what you had on hand. The pool needs to be empty after each use. Hopefully, it will last for the Summer season.
If you need to make this more permanent, you can paint the inside and the outside of the box with exterior paint, and you can use a thick plastic that lasts longer instead of using a folded tarp.
The pool dimensions we mentioned above will be suitable if you only plan to let a medium-sized dog soak. So if you want your dog to be able to swim freely, you can simply adjust the length and the height of the swimming pool.
